Chapter 7

Jake

I’ve done a lot of scary shit in my life, but nothing has ever shaken me like this. Annie—my wife of ten whole minutes—is in labor.

There’s not enough time to get her back to Chicago, so Killian drives us to the local hospital in Kenilworth. It looks like the babies will be born here in town.

My attention is focused one hundred percent on Annie. Killian will get us where we need to be, and Jason is monitoring Annie’s condition. All I have to do is focus on her.

I lean close to kiss her temple. She feels warm to the touch, perspiring lightly, but I imagine that’s to be expected. Her body’s in distress.

God, I hate the idea of her hurting, even for a moment. “Everything’s going to be okay,” I say, as much for myself as for her.

After shucking off my jacket and tie, and tossing them in the back, I undo the top two buttons of my shirt. Then I lay a hand on Annie’s abdomen, which is rock hard. When I feel one of the babies kick, I can’t help but smile. I’ll be able to hold that little thing in my arms in just a matter of hours. I don’t know whether to be excited or terrified.

Just as we pull up to the hospital admissions door, another contraction seizes Annie. Her entire body tenses, and she grabs my hands and squeezes tightly. My heart about stops when she lets out a whimper of pain.

I unbuckle Annie’s seatbelt and lift her into my arms. “Hang on, honey. We’re here.”

Jason opens my door and I slide out of the vehicle, Annie held securely in my arms. Still in the middle of a contraction, Annie scrunches her face up tightly, her eyes closed. I’m not even sure if she’s aware that we’ve arrived.

Jason leads the way as we storm through the automatic doors into the admissions area. He takes care of the details while I concentrate on Annie. A moment later, a female staff member brings over a wheelchair and I sit Annie down carefully.

“And you are?” the woman asks me.

“I’m her husband.” God, it feels good to say that. “Jake McIntyre. And this is my wife, Annie. She’s in labor, with twins.”

She nods. “I’ll take her to labor and delivery. If you would sign her in at the Admissions desk….”

Shaking my head, I reach for the chair handles. “I’m not leaving my wife.”

“I’ll take care of the paperwork,” Shane says, appearing suddenly at my side. He claps a hand solidly on my shoulder. “You take care of Annie. I’ve got this.”

When I glance back to see my entire family standing inside the entrance, a surge of emotion hits me hard. They’re all here for us. “Where’s Aiden?”

“He’s back at the house with Beth and Elly,” Shane says. “He’s fine.”

I push Annie’s wheelchair to the labor and delivery ward where we’re assigned a room. A nurse is already waiting for us inside. The delivery room looks more like an upscale hotel room than a hospital room, with floral wallpaper, a sofa and two armchairs.
